Vital I.D Inc. - Announcement of New Sport I.D range Launch of the Sport ID range will take place at the 2008 Vancouver Outdoor Adventure & Travel Shows - Running Triathlon Pavilion on February 16th / 17th at BC Place Stadium
Nanaimo based company Vital ID, have developed a Sport I.D range - a trio of products designed to appeal to the specific I.D needs of runners, joggers and cyclists
Vital ID Sport ID products are designed to provide vital lifesaving information to paramedics / first responders should the runner, jogger or cyclist be involved in an accident or suffer a medical emergency whilst running the sidewalk or riding a trail.
The frequency & severity of pedestrian & cycling accidents are alarming!
Pedestrian Accident Statistics In 2006, 4,784 pedestrian were killed and 61,000 injured in the United States alone & 69% of these occurred during the hours of darkness.
Cycling Accident Statistics In 2006, 773 cyclists were killed & 44,000 injured across the United States which equates to 2% of all traffic fatalities during the year.
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration - Traffic safety facts (2006)
The accident statistics for Canada are not as current as those in the US but but on a per capita basis are as high as those occurring south of the border!
Sarah Neal CEO / founder and keen recreational runner, identified the need to provide athletes with an effective, well designed and cost effective solution to carry their ID information and emergency contact numbers should they be involved in an accident or suffer a medical emergency when out for a run or on a ride.
Being a runner myself & my husband a cyclist, he always reminded me about carrying ID when I was out running, particularly when I was out running alone but I never wanted to be weighed down carrying my purse or driving license.
Our business was primarily in the manufacturing of medical ID and ID for children so it was a natural extension to develop ID solutions for runners and cyclists that take account of weight, size and convenience considerations that are important to runners & cyclists alike.
There are very few ID solutions available in the sports market at present and those that can be bought lacked vital features that make them really a really useful and versatile peice of gear of the runner or cyclist.
All of our Sports ID products have the valuable and unique feature allowing you to update your information should your medical, allergy or emergency contacts change. We believe your ID should change with you and you should not have to buy another ID if your information becomes outdated.
Additionally we decided to integrate 3M Scotchlite reflective material into each one of our Sports ID products to enable the runner and cyclist to be more easily seen by others at night, again a feature not seen in competitors products.
Our helmet mounted ID system for cyclists is a totally unique in the market. It is designed to be mounted to the exterior of the riders helmet, allowing paramedics easy access to the riders ID without the need to remove the riders helmet or move their patient, essential in reducing the potential for further neck & spinal trauma.
There was a lot of room to improve what little was out there in the sports I.D market and we're really pleased with the early reaction from runners & riders using our new Sports ID products.
The Vital ID Sport range consists of an ID wristband, a shoe mounted ID tag and unique the helmet ID system enable the runner / rider to carry their ID without penalty of weight, bulk or inconvenience.
The Sport ID range can be seen and purchased at Vital ID booth (#639) at the 2008 Vancouver Outdoor Adventure & Travel Shows-Running & Triathlon Pavilion February 16 & 17 at BC Place Stadium.
The ID products can be purchased through Vital ID's website www.vitalid.ca and through selected quality sporting retailers (see website for retailer listings).

Wear ID when you ride!
Cycling, snowboarding, skiing or roller-blading, a helmet can save your life! Cycling safety.Trends show that helmet use in sports is at an all time high*, proof that many people involved in these sports have considered the consequence of an accident and that the a helmet will protect their most valuable asset - their head! However what many people have not considered, cycling safety, is a need to carry identification when they ride. Important information such as emergency contact numbers, blood type, allergies or what medication you are taking could prove vital to emergency services in the event your involved in an accident, cycling safety, enabling you to be quickly and effectively treated and your close friends and family informed of your situation The potential for a serious bicycle accident is always present every time you head out on your bike, cycling safety. Fact - In 2006, 773 cyclists were killed and 44,000 injured across the United States (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration: Traffic Safety Facts 2006. Cycling safety)
Cyclists 25 years of age and older have made up an increasing proportion of cyclists that are involved in accidents, with people of this age more likely to have dependants, (children / spouse) that may also suffer from their accident. Ensuring that the emergency medical personnel can easily and quickly locate your personal contact and medical information is vital so they may notify your family of your accident, cycling safety, and ensure that your treatment is tailored for any specific needs you may have.
*(Helmet use up from 18% in 1991 to 50% in 1998 - this calculates to a 4.5% increase per year which approximates to 80-90% of cyclists wearing a helmet in 2007)
Out on a training ride, many of us carry no more than a few bucks, a banana or two and a drink, who wants to carry a heavy bulky wallet containing your ID? Out on a leisure ride with your kids, you maybe carrying your wallet but there is a good chance that you do not have emergency contact numbers, your blood type, allergies or medications noted in it. Think cycling safety.
Thankfully there are more effective and convenient solutions to carrying your ID than hauling your driving licence and wallet around with you 24/7. The most important considerations to note when looking for an ID product and ensuring cycling safety are:
1) High Visibility - emergency personnel need to be able to locate your ID in a hurry, ensure that your ID can easily found 2) Updateable Information - your emergency ID system is only as effective if the information that it contains is up to date. If you move or change telephone numbers (or if any of your emergency contacts do) you will need to update your information. Look for a product that will easily and cost-effectively enable you to do this, cycling safety 3) Safe Access to your ID - avoid system that require your body to be extensively manipulated or moved to access your information. Systems that store information inside your bike helmet are particularly poor as they necessitate the removal of your helmet and therefore increase the risk neck and spinal trauma. 4) Durable & Hardwearing - Riding you your bike can be both hard on you and your equipment. Dirt, mud, dust and water can infiltrate your equipment and your ID. A soggy wet and dirty ID card is no good if it cannot be read. Look for a system that is waterproof and keeps your information secure and private until the time you need it.No matter how invincible we think we are or whether we utter, "it will never happen to me" or "I've not been in an accident so far", consider cycling safety. Any one of us could be the next cyclist to be involved in an accident.
Avoid being the next statistic, the unidentified John or Jane Doe in the back of an ambulance - plan ahead and get ID "You'll thank yourself if it does ever happen to you".Check our our New Sport ID Reflective Helmet ID product on our website http://www.vitalid.ca/. The perfect solution or gift for any rider.Labels: night cycling safety, night running safety

Wear Helmet ID - It's Using Your Head!
Although some cyclists carry sport ID when they ride, the vast majority don't mainly as they have not considered the consequence and repercussions of them being involved in an accident when they are on their bike.Carrying sport ID when you ride can prove to be a lifesaver if you are involved in an accident and cannot communicate with paramedics (due to unconsciousness, pain or shock). Information that you could provide to assist your treatment and the contacting of your fiends and family is totally unable to paramedics if you cannot communicate to them and are not carrying any sport ID.Information such as your medical history, medical conditions / complications, presence of allergies or the names and telephone numbers of your loved ones can greatly assist the paramedics when arriving at an accident scene and can ensure that you loved ones are notified immediately of your situation.Carrying your sport ID when you ride makes sense and provides peace of mind both to you as the rider and to those who care for you. Be responsible, be prepared! For those few who do carry sport ID when out cycling, it is important to consider what kid of information you should carry and how best to carry it. Many people carry a credit card as their identification but clearly this provides very little personal information that would be of assistance in an accident situation. Others carry their wallet, which is of some use if it contains your drivers licence, but it is wise to supplement this minimum amount of information with any medical / allergy information that is important and also clearly note at least 2 - 3 contacts for use in an emergency (in case one or more are not available).Your sport ID should be kept close to your body so it is not separated from you in an accident. Keeping a wallet in a back jersey pocket may not be the best solution as it could easily be thrown from your jersey pocket in an accident and not be found by the paramedics or bystanders. Your sport ID should be easily found by paramedics and preferably display the EMS symbol (Star of Life) or the I.C.E (In Case of Emergency) designation for immediate recognition by medical personnel. An effective sport ID solution to use when cycling is our Sport ID - Helmet system. This helmet mounted system is specifically designed to allow riders to carry their information and is easily located by paramedics in the event of an accident as it is mounted on the exterior of the helmet and clearly displays the ICE designation. The sport ID is securely held within the slimline and aerodynamic pocket on the side of the helmet and will not be separated from you or your helmet in the event of a crash (not matter how severe). The sport ID card contained stores your vital lifesaving medical, allergy and emergency contact information and can be easily updated should your information change. As an additional benefit the Sport ID - Helmet system is made from 3M yellow Scotchlite reflective material and comes equipped with two accessory reflective sticker sets to affix to your helmet / bike to help other see you more easily in low light conditions, thereby reducing the potential for an accident from the outset. The information is stored on a waterproof sport ID card and the entire Helmet ID system is durable so can withstand the elements and all the abuse it will receive in the day to day use of your helmet.Although primarily designed to provide an effective method for cyclist to carry their sport ID, our Sport ID - Helmet system can be equally valuable to those involved in other helmet wearing sports such as skiing, snow-boarding, skate-boarding, hockey and motorcycling.Check out our new Sport ID - Helmet system today and use your head.... It may just save your life!To see all of our ID solutions, visit our website as http://www.vitalid.ca/Labels: bike, cycling helmet, rider, sport ID
